St. Petersburg, Florida -- A man faces felony child abuse charges after police say a child he was caring for was taken to the hospital with multiple head and facial injuries.
Authorities arrived at the home in the 5400 block of 1/2 9th Ave. N. Saturday afternoon where they were met out front by Anthony Prestero with an injured, unconscious 2-year-old boy in his arms. Prestero told them the child had fallen from a couch, but he wouldn't let them inside.
The child was taken to Bayfront Medical Center where an examination revealed the child's severe head and facial injuries were inconsistent with the story Prestero told police.
The child's mother told authorities she left the child in Prestero's custody, who is her live-in boyfriend, while she went to buy drugs.
In an interview with detectives, they say Prestero continued to claim the child fell but his story changed from the couch to the kitchen counter.
Due to the nature of the child's injuries, which doctors say were consistent with a beating and not from a fall, Prestero, 23, was arrested and charged.
The child was taken to All Children's Hospital where he, as of Sunday afternoon, was stable condition.
