CHARLOTTE, NC (USA TODAY)-- The chairman of the California Democratic Party reportedly compared Paul Ryan and the Republicans today to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, John Burton made these remarks about the GOP vice presidential nominee before the California delegation met for breakfast at the Democratic National Convention:

"They lie and they don't care if people think they lie. ...Joseph Goebbels it's the big lie, you keep repeating it," Burton said Monday before the Blake Hotel breakfast. He said Ryan told "a bold-faced lie and he doesn't care that it was a lie. That was Goebbels, the big lie."

Goebbels was the minister of propaganda for the Nazis.

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt criticized Burton's remarks.

"That obviously doesn't reflect the views of the campaign, that doesn't have any place in the discourse here in Charlotte," LaBolt told reporters.

The SF Chronicle also reports Burton, a former congressman and California state senator, called Ryan a "horse's ass." Burton's comments appear to be directed, in part, to the proposals by Ryan to dramatically overhaul Medicare.

GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney and Ryan want to turn the health care insurance program for future retirees over to private insurers. There would be an option to keep the traditional, government-run Medicare program. Democrats have roundly denounced the proposals, saying it would "end Medicare as we know it."
