Safety Harbor, Florida -- A man who told police he took synthetic drugs just before he attacked his mother is in custody Monday.
Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies say Robert Payne walked into the kitchen where his mother was doing dishes and, for some unknown reason, grabbed her around the neck and began choking her. When she hit him on the head with a plate, he reportedly took a piece of it and cut her throat.
Roofers working on a neighbor's house witnessed the two run outside during the fight and called police. While in custody, Payne told police he had taken synthetic drugs, mentioning spice and K-2.
Both Payne, 22, and his mother Victoria, 65, were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident and charged have not yet been filed.
