Clearwater, Florida - Police have cited the driver of a pickup truck responsible for a crash that injured nine people on the Courtney Campbell Causeway Tuesday evening.
Antonio Hernandez, 19, had no valid driver's license, no proof of insurance and failed to yield to oncoming traffic, police said.
He was driving a pickup truck with 8 people aboard when he made a U-turn at Damascus Road and struck a Nassan Altima driven by Marlene Val-Belcher, 54.
The impact spun the Nissan off the road and onto the sand at Courtney Campbell Beach, police said, and caused the engine compartment to burst into flames. Citizens pulled Ms. Val-Belcher from the car before rescue personnel arrived.
The drivers and passengers were injured in the crash, three seriously. Four went to the hospital.
The collision closed the eastbound lanes of the causeway.
