Palm River, Florida -- A Hillsborough County deputy says he was in fear for his life when he shot and killed a man.
It all started early Wednesday morning when deputies headed out to a home on Turner Drive in Palm River. They were responding to a call about a man in the home who was armed with a gun and was apparently threatening to kill himself.
When deputies arrived,they say that man, 66-year-old George Lewis Garrett, walked out of the home still armed withthe handgun.
"He refused to obey the commands of the deputy to put the gun down, which ultimately resulted in the deputy using deadly force," says Col. Donna Lusczynski with the Hillsborough Sheriff's Office."Fortunately, no other deputies or people inside the home were hurt."
Garrett was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he died.
10 News did some digging, and it doesn't appear he has a criminal history.
The deputy who shot him,44-year-old Corporal Duane Benton is a 16-year veteran. Heis on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
There were several people in the home at the time.They are being interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
