MESQUITE, TX(CBSDFW.COM) -A mistake by a fill-in pee wee football coach means even if they make the playoffs, the entire team will be forced to skip them.

The Patriots play in the Mesquite Pee Wee league. With several games left in the season, it's possible they could get enough wins to go to the playoffs. But, they've already been disqualified.

"It's not fair all the other kids get to go and we don't," says 12-year-old Camron Johnson.

When the team's head coach had to leave for a family emergency, Darrik Ward, a parent, volunteered to step in and coach.

He allowed all the kids to play, but little did he know, some of the kids had not been cleared by the league yet.

He admits it was his mistake, and it was a costly one. If at any point a team allows an ineligible player to play in a game, the team loses the right to play in the playoffs.

"Whenever we don't follow our rules, all the coaches come back and gripe and holler at us because we don't follow our rules," says Ronnie Henderson with the Mesquite Pee Wee Football Association. "So we're trying to follow the rules."

The kids are heartbroken.

"Makes me frustrated we didn't do anything. We didn't do anything physically wrong. We were just out to play football," says 11-year-old A.J. Arroway.

Parents are also upset, after investing more than300dollars in fees and equipment. They say they understand a rule is a rule, but they are asking the board to make an exception so the kids are not punished.
