(USA TODAY) Johnny Lewis, an actor who appeared on FX'sSons of Anarchyand had roles on The O.C., Boston Public and Criminal Minds, died on Wednesday in Los Angeles. He was 28.

AP reports that Lewis, who played Kip "Half Sack" Epps onAnarchy, fell to his death Wednesday after apparently beating his elderly landlady to death, authorities said.

The Los Angeles County coroner's office today identified the bodies as those of Lewis, 28, and Catherine Davis, 81.

Neighbors called police Wednesday morning to report a woman screaming and three men fighting. Officers went to a home in the Los Feliz area near Hollywood and found the body of a woman in the driveway, Sgt. Frank Preciado told theLos Angeles Times.

TMZ reports that neighbors heard the 81-year-old woman screaming and then saw a young man outside her home attack two other people with a piece of wood, before he climbed onto the roof and fell to his death.

UPDATE: At a press conference Thursday, LAPD Commander Andrew Smith said that "nobody else was in the house." but a dead cat was found in the house.

Police could not confirm whether drugs or alcohol played a part in the case, but said that Lewis died from his fall from the rooftop.

AP reports that Lewis pleaded no contest to assault with a deadly weapon and attempted burglary in separate cases this year, according to records. He enrolled in a drug, alcohol and psychiatric treatment program over the summer and was just released from jail a week ago. As a condition of his probation in both cases, he was ordered not to use narcotics.

UPDATE 9/28:Sons of Anarchycreator Kurt Sutter, commentedon the deathon Twitter, writing that the news of Lewis' death was not a complete surprise. "it was a tragic end for an extremely talented guy, who unfortunately had lost his way. i wish i could say that i was shocked by the events last night, but i was not. i am deeply sorry that an innocent life had to be thrown into his destructive path. yes, it's day or mourning, but it's also a day of awareness and gratitude. sadly, some of us carry the message by dying."
