Winter Haven, Florida -- Winter Haven Police have arrested the driver involved in a hit and run crash that left a bicyclist in critical condition early Friday morning.
Police say Terry Ross was crossing Hwy 17 at Ave. D NW on his bicycle around 12:49 a.m. when he traveled into the path of John Harned III's 2011 black Cadillac CTS who was heading south on Hwy 17.
Ross did not have any lights on his bike and authorities say the light had just turned green as Harned crossed the intersection. Ross' bicycle impacted the front driver's side of the Cadillac throwing him into the Cadillac's windshield.
As Harned's passenger Ryan Narthey called 911 and jumped out of the car to help Ross, Harned, 31, took off before police could get there. He was arrested a short time later at his Winter Haven home. He has been charged with Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Serious Injury.
Ross, 46, was taken to Winter Haven Hospital with serious head injuries and was transferred to Lakeland Regional Medical Center's trauma unit where he remains in critical condition.
