Lakeland, Florida -- A 14-year-old high school freshman is facing a premeditated first degree murder charge, accused of choking her newborn son to death and putting his body in a shoe box.

There are a number of questions surrounding this case, many of which may never be answered.

There's the question of how a petite, thin teenager managed to hide her full term pregnancy from her family. You may also be asking how in the world a young girl can bring herself to deliver her own child and then choke the healthynewborn until he stopped breathing.

"It's repulsive and makes us all sick to our stomachs," said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.

Investigators say the girl delivered the baby in the family home in Lakeland on September 19.

"She turned the water on and then she bit into a cloth to try to keep the noise down from her mother who was in the residence. She delivered the baby into the toilet," said Sheriff Grady Judd.

His tone was softer than usual as he recounted what he says was the girl's confession.

"She took it from the toilet, she checked it for a pulse and then choked it to death and then she felt for a pulse again, cut the umbilical cord, she got into the shower and washed herself and the baby, put the baby in a box," said Sheriff Judd.

That same day, her mother discovered the mess in the bathroom and took her daughter to Lakeland Regional Medical Center after her daughter claimed she had a miscarriage and flushed the toilet without looking, according to the arrest report.

Doctors confirmed this is what may have happened. On Saturday, the 22nd, though, as the mother was picking up laundry from her daughter's bedroom, she noticed a foul odor coming from a storage stool.

As she sorted through the clothing, she discovered the deceased baby. She called her sisters who then called 911, according to the arrest report.

"Quite frankly, there will never be adequate explanations," said Sheriff Judd.

The girl is only 100 pounds and stands 5'3" tall and yet, investigators say her mother was in denial about the pregnancy because her daughter told her she was not pregnant and was a virgin.

Sheriff Judd says the mother's sisters told her repeatedly to check on the girl because they believed she may be pregnant as she continued to gain weight in her belly and wear baggy clothing, even during the hot summer months.

The arrest report states the girl knew about options like adoption, but she never sought help.

"She confessed. We asked, why she did that, she said because she didn't want to change the relationship with her mother and her family. We asked why she had not done something with the child, she said 'I didn't know what to do with him' and we talked to the mother and the mother was in absolute, total denial," said Sheriff Judd.

The mother told investigators she had her daughter take two pregnancy tests, but allowed her to do it in private. Sheriff Judd says the tests came back with no response, which the mother interpreted as negative.

"On one hand, you want to be indignant and outraged and that is an appropriate response, on the other hand it's absolutely sad..how did we ever get to this point," asked Sheriff Judd.

No one at the family home would talk, only to say "please let the family grieve."

The sheriff's office is working with the State Attorney's Office on this ongoing investigation. The Sheriff says they are still looking into whether the mother should face negligence charges. Investigators are also working to determine who the father of the child is and whether charges will apply.

Due to the number of unanswered questions at this point in the investigation, 10 News is not naming the girl or her mother. The girl is being held in juvenile detention. It will be up to the State Attorney's Office to decide whether she should face charges as an adult.

The Sheriff added, "Nothing seems to be sacred anymore, not even a child's life, not even a baby's life."
