PLANTATION (CBS4) - The South Florida girl who's turning heads as the first female quarterback to play varsity football in Florida got some extra attention Thursday night.

Erin DiMeglio traded her helmet for a tiara at South Plantation High School's Homecoming game.

DiMeglio was crowned Homecoming Queen for 2012.

"I was surprised, because a lot of girls at this school, they know a lot of people," DiMeglio said.

She said her position on the football team has brought her some extra attention, though.

"A lot of people know me more now cause I play football," DiMeglio said for her throne on the track during halftime.

DiMeglio's mom watched from the sidelines, like she does at every game. Even though her daughter didn't play in the 18-0 victory over Hollywood Hills High School, said says this game was extra special.

"It doesn't get any better than that," Kathleen DiMeglio said. "I'm so proud of Erin for her determination and her follow through. She wanted to do this and she did."

Of course, every queen, needs her king. It just so happens, DiMeglio's royal counterpart, is also her counterpart on the field. Wide receiver Hordly Seide was named the Paladins' Homecoming King.

"Erin's known around the nation now, and for me to be up here with her it's an honor," Seide said. "Erin, she's not just my teammate, she's like my friend."

DiMeglio was glad to share the throne with a teammate.

"We're all a big family," DiMeglio said. "So it's really cool."

After a the coronation ceremony, it was back to business for the high school senior who also takes college courses.

"It's really exciting," DiMeglio said. "I love being out on the field. It's just a really exciting time."

While there's no room for a scepter or sash on the field, the quarterback queen did have a message for her fellow students.

"Thank you, thank you for all your support," she said.

DiMeglio said she loves football, but she has other plans for after graduation.

She hopes to play basketball for the University of Central Florida.
