St. Petersburg, Florida -- St. Petersburg detectives have arrested the man wanted in connection with the drive-by shooting at 18th Avenue South and 22nd Street Sunday morning.
According to police, two men in a white Pontiac were stopped at a red light, when another car pulled up next to them and some people inside opened fire. To try to get away, detectives said the victim drove his car through the red light and crashed into another car. The suspects continued to fire shots after the accident.
The car the shooting victim crashed into was driven by Crystal Labrecqe. The mother of two said she did not even know at first what was going on. She later realized she was caught in the middle of a shooting and fortunately was unharmed.
Detectives identified one suspect as Rashawn Harold Summers. After receiving a tip thatSummers would be making a court appearance around 10:30 a.m. Monday in Clearwater, detectiveswaited for him as left the Criminal Court Complex.
When detectives tried to confront him, he took off, but was caught after a brief chase on foot.
Detectives say they believe it was Summers who fired at least eight rounds from an assault rifle at 19-year-old Julius Simons' carwhile in a white Infinity sedan. The Infinity has not yet been found.
A motive for the shooting is not known at this time and detectives are trying to identify the other three people who were seen in the car.
Summers, 24, is charged with Attempted Homicide and Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle.
