St. Petersburg, Florida -- Local vets are currently treating a guide dog that was reportedly injured by a driver in St. Pete Friday.

BluePearl Veterinary doctors say the mixed-breed, 2-year-old female dog -- who goes by the name Abbey -- will require surgery in order to save her life.

Abbey's owner, 59-year-old Terry Ellrick, is visually impaired and Abbey helps him get by as his guide dog.

BluePearl Veterinary Partners is accepting donations from the public to assist with the cost of Abbey's care. Anyone who wants to make a donation is encouraged to contact BluePearl's hospital in Tampa at 813-933-8944.

The alleged collision occurred at 5th Avenue North and 29th Street around 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 16. The driver did not stick around and no charges have been filed in the case. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call St. Pete Police at 727-893-7780.
