PINELLAS PARK, Florida -- Pinellas Park police say they've arrested a 55-year-old man for the hit-and-run death of a transient on Saturday.
Police say 48-year-old Scott Benedict was struck and killed while attempting to cross U.S. Highway 19 near Mainlands Blvd. Benedict was believed to be a transient with no known permanent address. He was walking and pushing a bicycle when the accident happened, according to the Pinellas Park Police Department.
After hitting Benedict, police say the suspect fled. On Sunday, investigators arrested 55-year-old Nicholas Kachmar of St. Petersburg and charged him with leaving the scene of a crash involving death. They believe he was driving the 2001 white Ford Explorer SUV that hit Benedict. Investigators say damage on the SUV is consistent with evidence found at the crash scene.
