Bradenton, Florida -- A dog that was found with its head split open -- possibly from an ax -- is continuing a remarkable recovery.
The pit bull, which has since been named Axel, was found back in November with a large gash across his head. The horrific cut was nearly two inches deep.

Axel underwent surgery at Beach Veterinary Clinic, and now more than a month later, you can barely see the scar from the traumatic injury.
A Facebook group to help pay Axel's bills was set up, and donations from around the world poured in. Vet staff say Axel will begin heartworm treatment next, and could be ready for adoption by mid-January.
Investigators believe Axel's injuries were deliberate, and came fro an ax or other blunt object. So far, no arrests have been made.
