Tampa, FL-- A man who robbed a local hardware store tried to make a get away in a stolen work truck Wednesday morning, but was caught when a car chase ended with him crashing into an orange grove.

It was shortly after 9 a.m. when 30-year-old Glenn Maxwell was caught stealing items from the Ace Hardware Store located off the 800 block of Bloomingdale Ave. East.

When the manager confronted him, Maxwell handed over his I.D., but then made a temporary getaway on foot.

The deputies who responded to the hardware store could not find Maxwell until about an hour later, when reports say a work crew re-surfacing tennis courts at a nearby apartment complex heard one of their work trucks start up.

Maxwell was in the truck.

The crew watched as he tried to get away, and saw him cause approximately $3,000 to the tennis court fence and a nearby picnic table, reports say.

Deputies were able to catch up to Maxwell in the truck near Fish Hawk Blvd. and Osprey Ridge Dr., and followed him to Edison Rd. and Keysville Dr. where they say he eventually crashed into an orange grove.

There were no injuries, and officials say they arrested Maxwell for Grand Theft Auto, Burglary of a Vehicle, Felony Criminal Mischief and Fleeing and Eluding.
