Tallahassee, Florida -- Gov. Rick Scott is changing his mind about the election law he signed in 2011 that many believe contributed to the widespread election problems last November and made Florida a laughingstock.

Florida's election problems under the microscope

The law Scott signed reduced early voting days from 14 to eight, but now the governor thinks Florida needs more early voting days.

Gov. Rick Scott rejects early voting extension

After meeting with the state's top election official Thursday, Scott issued a statement saying he thinks counties should have the power to choose between eight and 14 days of early voting.

Lawmakers to hear about voting problems

The governor also wants to allow supervisors of elections to open more early voting sites, as well as larger sites, to help reduce long lines and wait times.

Election supervisors develop plan for smoother polls

Plus, Scott is calling for a shorter ballot, including shorter explanations of constitutional amendments. State lawmakers placed lengthy amendments on the 2012 ballot with summaries of 600 words or more.

Jessica Lowe, of Minor of the League of Women Voters of Florida, welcomes Gov. Scott's ideas and hopes the Legislature adopts them.

"We're optimistic about that but, as always, we want to wait until we actually see what's put together and what's finally proposed on paper before we get too enthusiastic."

The League of Women Voters is pushing for other election changes, including online voter registration.

"That's something that other states have implemented that have saved other states money and have made the voter registration process more efficient and accurate and we'd like to see that implemented here," said Lowe-Minor.

The League also wants better access for elderly and disabled voters who can't wait in long lines. Lowe-Minor says expediting the voting process for those voters is definitely needed in Florida.
