ST. PETERSBURG, Florida -- Danna Alloway is proficient with an AR-15 rifle and a .380 semi-automatic handgun.
She takes shot after shot, all hitting the mark center of mass.
Danna is a former Pinellas school teacher who once had her life threatened at school by a parent. She says, "I had to jump over the principals desk and hide underneath it."
She didn't own a gun then, but she does now, and she is licensed to carry a concealed weapon. She says she fully supports teachers who are properly trained to carry guns at school.
It's evident teachers want to carry guns. Close to a hundred recently turned out to take a concealed weapons permit class. The class was offered free of charge by a local security expert, Lenny Bogdanos of International Executive Protection. He says the demand was shocking.
Bogdanos says, "I just want them to be safety educated, so they don't harmthemselvesor anybody else."
Among those taking the class was Nancy Naparela, a Pinellas high school teacher. Her husband, Jim, says he wants his wife to learn how to shoot.
Teacher Teresa Cunningham doesn't believe all teachers should be armed. She says she feels safe because there's a cop at her school. But if things get out of control, she'd feel better packing. "I'd feel better if I had a weapon because I'm comfortable using them."
Some legislators in Tallahassee are exploring the possibility of arming teachers. Representative Dennis Baxley from Ocala says, "Those permit holders could be part of an emergency plan to act, there could be reasonable discussion that could make our kids safe."
Pinellas Sheriff Bob Gualteri says school shootings are a fact of life, but there are many things that can be done do to improve security. With that said, the sheriff is against arming teachers, which he says would create way too many problems for law enforcement.
The sheriff admits by the time law enforcement arrives on the scene of a school shooting, most of the damage is already done. It's during those precious minutes, teachers say, they and their students are most vulnerable, and life and death decisions have to be made in the blink of an eye.
