(USA TODAY) Look out for Oscar March Madness in 2014.
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences set the date of the next Oscars telecast for Sunday, March 2, 2014, according to a release sent out Monday. The awards program goes back to February 22 in 2015 for the 87th Academy Awards.
The 85th Oscars took place on February 24 and was hosted by Seth MacFarlane.
Scott Feinberg, lead awards analyst for the trade publicationThe Hollywood Reporter, cites the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia, as the reason for the move into March.
"They had no choice but to do this, you cannot go up against the Olympics," says Feinberg.
In past award seasons there has been a push to move the Oscars earlier to prevent award-show fatigue.
"A lot of people are hoping to make the award season even shorter, because some of the excitement for the Oscars has been usurped by all of these shows that are popping up prior," says Feinberg. "But it would be very hard to do this in 2014 with the Olympics."
