Monterrey, MX (Sports Network) - Former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic was upended by defending champion Timea Babos in Wednesday's second round at the $235,000 Monterrey Open.
Babos, who bested Romanian Alexandra Cadantu in last year's Monterrey finale, smashed 11 aces and capitalized on 11 double faults from the former French Open champion Ivanovic to earn a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 decision on the hardcourts at Sierra Madre Tennis Club.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova pounded Tereza Mrdeza in their first-round matchup, as the fifth-seeded Russian, who won back-to-back titles here in 2010 and 2011, pasted the Croatian qualifier 6-1, 6-1.
In other second-round action, Monica Niculescu knocked off sixth-seeded Yanina Wickmayer 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, while seventh-seeded Urszula Radwanska rolled past Croat Donna Vekic 6-4, 6-1.
Also on Wednesday, eighth-seeded Ayumi Morita of Japan defeated Galina Voskoboeva 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
This week's Monterrey champ will collect $40,000.
