Hope, Indiana -- A raccoon that wandered into a power substation is being blamed for an hours-long outage in a south-central Indiana community.
Anestimated 1,100 customers of both Duke Energy and Bartholomew CountyREMC were plunged into darkness late Tuesday night when the raccooncaused an electrical short in both lines and equipment in a Duke Energysubstation. Power was restored to the area early Wednesday about fivehours later.
REMC line superintendent Jim Kamman tells The Republic the raccoon "got into a place he shouldn't have been."
He says crews will try to better secure the facility to safeguard it from future animal intrusions.
