LARGO, Florida -- A Largo man is in a Pinellas County jail for the murder of a toddler in his care.
"Any child death is extremely difficult for all the officers involved, but I would say this case is among the some of the worse that I've seen," said Lt. Stephen Slaughter of the Largo Police Department.
The incident happened at the Melrose on the Bay apartments on Foxbridge Circle North. According to the child's mother, Karina Mora, she and Cruz took the baby to All Children's Hospital after noticing something was wrong.
Medical officials examined the child and found she had severe injuries to her chest cavity and no independent brain function.
That is when the Largo Police Department was called to investigate this as a possible child abuse case.
During the investigation, Cruz reportedly admitted to throwing the child against a wall and chair, but it's not yet clear why.
The 27-year-old was originally charged with aggravated child abuse, but late Sunday the charges were upped to murder when the toddler died.
Largo police said early Sunday that DCF has no previous record of complaints.
Mora, the child's mother, has not been charged.
