Brandon, Florida - A Hillsborough Sheriff's detective shot and killed a suspect Tuesday afternoon in Brandon. According to Sheriff David Gee, the shooting happened, while the man was struggling with another detective over that detective's gun.

It happened at 904 W. Wheeler Road. Detective Jack Thompson had gone there to pick up and question a man. The Sheriff's Office believed the man may have been involved in some recent violent crimes in the Brandon area.

Thompson detained the man in the backseat of a jeep and called for backup. But then Gee says the man grabbed for Thompson's gun tearing it away holster and all. The two men struggled.

That's when backup arrived.

"Deputy Manny Gonzalez, a 16-year veteran, arrived and saw the struggle taking place. Thompson communicated that the suspect had his firearm and he fired one round striking the suspect," Gee said during a news conference at the scene.

The suspect was transported to Tampa General Hospital and pronounced dead.

The suspect has since been identified as 50-year-old Bobby Earl Driggers of Seffner. Officials say Driggers had an extensive criminal record in both Florida and Kansas.
