With Memorial Day fast approaching,TripAdvisor announces the results of its Memorial Day and summer travel survey that uncovers what people are doing and where they will be going next weekend and this summer.

Memorial Day Travel

Nearly 1/3 of Americans will be traveling for Memorial Day next week. More than half (56%) will be driving to their destination and the majority will be hitting the road on Friday, May 24.

In fact, 93% of travelers said they will not be affected by gasoline prices with the average national gas price being $3.60, down $.15 from last year and $.36 from 2011.

As the majority of drivers will be traveling between 100 and 200 miles (29%), the most popular Memorial Day activities include:

  1. Attending a cookout or BBQ
  2. Shopping
  3. Swimming
  4. Hiking
  5. Attending a festival or fair

Summer Travel

More people will be traveling this summer. 86% are planning a summer trip, up by 7% from last year:

  1. 74% will be traveling by car
  2. 64% will be flying
  3. 11% will take the train
