Clearwater, FL - Investigators say a man who drove his car into a Clearwater mall department store may have been trying to kill himself.

Clearwater Police and Fire Rescue got a call shortly after 2 a.m. Wednesday about a car that crashed into the Dillard's store at Westfield Countryside Mall. The crash subsequently started a fire in the east side of the building.

The driver was pulled from the vehicle and taken to the hospital with serious, but non-life threatening burns and injuries.

The man reportedly told police he was trying to kill himself, and that he left a suicide note back at his home.

The fire caused extensive smoke and water damage to a back storeroom. Investigators say the sprinkler system managed to extinguish the fire almost immediately, but it took nearly four hours for a ventilation truck to clear smoke out of Dillard's.

The mall is expected to be open on Wednesday, but Dillard's will remain closed.

In total, there were 24 firefighting units on scene. There were no injuries to mall or firefighting personnel.
