(USA TODAY) Billy Crystal is returning to TV as the star of a potential series on FX.

The actor and comedian will star inThe Comedians, as, um, a "superstar big-name comedian" who's "reluctantly paired with a younger, edgier comedian," the network says. The series, based on a Swedish format, is being produced by Larry Charles (Seinfeld), Matt Nix (Burn Notice) and Ben Wexler (Community, Arrested Development), along with Crystal.

Charles, who also has directedCurb Your Enthusiasmepisodes, will also direct the pilot, to be filmed this summer. If FX orders the series, it is expected to appear in 2014.

Crystal, who becamefamous in a trailblazing role as a gay man on ABC's 1970s satireSoap, has appeared infrequently on TV since, as Oscars host (returning last year), in a brief stint onSaturday Night Livein the mid-1980s, and in occasional guest roles on series such asFriendsandFrasier.
