Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Prior to the third installment of a four-game series with the Blue Jays, the Boston Red Sox designated pitcher Clayton Mortensen for assignment and selected the contract of infielder Jonathan Diaz from Triple-A Pawtucket.
The 28-year-old right-hander was 1-2 with a 5.34 earned run average in 24 appearances this season for the Sox. He had been hampered with a right groin strain, an issue which landed him on the DL earlier this month.
For the 28-year-old Diaz, the call-up will be the first of his career. He hit .242 with two homers, eight triples and 21 RBI in 55 games for the PawSox in 2013, while playing second base, third base and shortstop.
