Lorton, VA (Sports Network) - Eric Sugimoto shot 7-under-par 63 on Monday and grabbed a 2-stroke, first-round lead at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.
Sugimoto, of San Diego, Calif., played bogey-free at Laurel Hill Golf Club.
Ian Davis and Canada's Garrett Rank share second place after the duo carded matching 5-under 65s.
Sam Saunders is alone in fourth place at 4-under 66, while Addison Lambeth and James Erkenbeck are tied for fifth at 3-under 67.
Sugimoto began on the 10th tee and promptly birdied two of his first three holes. He followed that strong start with a pair of pars before notching back- to-back birdies from the 15th and adding another at the par-5 18th for an outward 30.
Around the turn, Sugimoto played steady. He had seven pars and a birdie over his next eight holes before closing in style with a birdie at No. 9 to end the first round ahead by a pair.
