Lorton, VA (Sports Network) - Michael Kim and Joshua Stone were among the first-round winners on Wednesday at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.
Kim, who earlier in the day was named to the U.S. Walker Cup team, cruised to an 8 & 6 win over Brandon Hortt at Laurel Hill Golf Club.
Stone was one of four players to advance to the match-play portion of the championship on Wednesday. The playoff for the last few spots started as a 13- for-11 extra session on Tuesday that ended as a 5-for-4 playoff on Wednesday morning.
Stone gained one of those spots then took down stroke-play medalist Garrett Rank, the 2012 U.S. Mid-Amateur runner-up, in 19 holes.
The other three players to advance in the playoff were Tyler Klava, Alberto Sanchez and Greg Condon. Eric Sugimoto, who fired a 63 in Monday's opening round, posted a 6 & 5 win over Klava, while Sanchez fell 3 & 2 to Sam Horsfield, and Condon dropped a 2 & 1 decision to Ian Davis.
Along with Stone, Sean Knapp, Thomas Lim, Brandon Cigna and Justin Shin all needed extra holes to advance to the second round. Austin Smotherman claimed a 6 & 4 win, while Nick Brothers, Zacheng Dou, Derek Fribbs and Eric Sugimoto all rolled to 6 & 5 victories.
The second and third round will be played on Thursday, while the quarterfinals and semifinals are slated for Friday. The championship wraps up on Saturday with the 36-hole final.
