Wesley Chapel, Florida -- When is the last time you heard about a road construction project ahead of schedule?

How about one that's more than a year ahead of schedule?

Well here's some news that is sure to make a few motorists in the Bay area happy: the widening of I-75 between Fowler Ave and State Road 56 is more than 500 days ahead of schedule.

The 11.4-mile long project was not supposed to be completed until December of 2015, but at the current pace Florida Department of Transportation spokesperson John McShaffrey says the work could be finished by the middle of next year.

"I think that the contractor on this project is very well organized, they have a good plan and they're attacking that plan, providing all the resources and more to get the job done," McShaffrey.

The $95 million project is being handled by Prince Contracting, LLC.

However just up the road,McShaffrey says it's a much different story.

Since March of 2011 Better Roads Inc has been working to expand a 4.3-mile section of I-75 between State Road 56 and State Road 54. The $23 million project was supposed to be completed by now, but it is well behind schedule.

"I have not worked on any that have been this far behind, I've been doing this for 18 years."

In fact,McSaffrey says Better Roads is so far behind schedule the company is being assessed a fine of $5,809 a day until the project is complete.

The initial contract called for the project to be done in 565 work days. FDOT later added 138 days to the timeline. Yet as it stands today, the project is roughly six months behind schedule.

A vice president for Better Roads told 10 News he had no comment as to why the project was so far behind. Instead, he directed 10 News back to FDOT.

"Well, the contractor is going to tell you weather and some additional work has put it behind. Looking at it from the DOT perspective, we would have to say lack of resources committed to the project... have not been sufficient to get the job built... within the contract time."

So when will this work be done? McShaffrey says possibly October.
