New Port Richey, Florida -- A 29-year-old former candidate for Pasco County commissioner was killed early Monday morning after authorities say the boat he was riding in hit a channel marker in New Port Richey.

Authorities say Joshua Griffin died at the scene behind a home in the 4500 block of Harborpointe Drive just after midnight. He was riding in a 22-foot Boston Whaler boat at the time.

According to his bio on his website, Griffin grew up in Pasco County and lived there until his death Monday. He attended Pasco Hernando Community College until moving over to the University of Tampa where he majored in Political Science and Government Affairs and minored in English and Philosophy.

At the time of his death, Griffin was working as a Project Manager at Bio Mass Tech, Inc., an Environmental Service Company working in "green" product solutions.

His hobbies included boating, fishing, diving, hunting and sports.

Griffin ran for the Pasco County commissioner District 3 seat back in 2012 but came in last in the race.

The driver of the boat at the time of the crash has not yet been identified.
