New Port Richey, Florida -- If you smell smoke outside in Pasco County on Tuesday don't be alarmed -- it's probably from a prescribed burn at a state park.

Officials are burning approximately 30 acres of mesic flatwoods, scrubby flatwoods, and salt marsh located just west of US 19 North, between Ridge Road and Salt Springs Road.

Prescribed burning mimics natural fire cycles to restore healthy forests and natural communities, reduce undergrowth that accumulates over time and decreases the potential for wildfire. Burned lands experience an increase in native wildflowers, birds and other wildlife.
