Gainesville, Florida -- Last year on Sept. 27, Vernon Hargreaves III was getting ready to host cross-town rival Durant under the Friday night lights. This year, he's just a few hours away from playing in the first SEC road game of his career.
Hargreaves is off to a brilliant start to his Florida Gators career. In the team's first three games, the former Wildcats star already has two interceptions (with 39 return yards) and five tackles. In a secondary that has endured a few injuries already, Hargreaves has been a bright spot for his head coach.
"He's a really good football player," Will Muschamp said after the Gators' 31-17 win over Tennessee last Saturday. "He works extremely hard. He's really smart. He understands the game."
His understanding probably comes from his father, who is a college coach who worked at USF in 2012. Hargreaves returned kicks, scored five touchdowns and totaled 110 tackles, 5 interceptions, 5 forced fumbles and 5 pass breakups as a senior at Wharton.
"I'd like to say it's coaching," Muschamp said with a grin, "but some guys have natural ability."
Hargreaves and the Gators (2-1, 1-0 SEC) travel to face Kentucky on Saturday.
