St. Petersburg, FL -- Formula and baby food are only a couple items provided to mothers in need. But because of the government shutdown, the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program has come to a stop and millions of babies are left without food.

New mother Jessica Williams is doing what she can to raise her 2-month-old baby. The two are currently living at The Alpha House of Pinellas County, until Jessica can get back on her feet.

The Alpha House gives pregnant women in need food, housing and a plan to get their lives back on track.

Like Jessica, many of the women there rely on WIC to survive. It's a government-funded program that provides millions of low-income mothers and their babies with food and supplies. The program quickly came to a stop on Tuesday because of the government shutdown.

Executive Director Jennifer Stracick has been with the Alpha House for several years and appreciates the community support, but is worried about the shutdown.

"I'm really hoping that the government shutdown doesn't last long and that they are able to come to an agreement and these girls can get their WIC checks, because it's what they depend on," said Stracick.

The Alpha house has some supplies, but with 18 women and their children living there, the goods are running low and won't last for long.

According to the USDA, most states only have enough money to fund the WIC program for the next one to two weeks.

"If it does last longer and she's not able to eat that does scare me, because I can't personally provide because formula is very very expensive," said Williams.

The 21-year-old said that she isn't much for politics, but admits that something has to give or it's the children who will suffer.

"There's pregnant Republicans and there's pregnant Democrats, you know, we all have children. As they say, we all bleed the same; we all bleed red. If not for themselves, just think of the kids growing up and for future generations to be smart and healthy and strong so they can make a difference in the world," said Williams.
