Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Logan Couture's goal in the second round of the shootout was the only time the puck found the back of the net as the San Jose Sharks took a 1-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Monday. In the second round, Couture skated in on Jimmy Howard and deked back to the forehand before snapping the puck into the left corner. Todd Bertuzzi had the last chance for Detroit and beat Antti Niemi to the left side. Bertuzzi lifted the rolling puck from a sharp angle and appeared to have an open net, but Niemi was able to lift his right pad and stop the puck for the win. Niemi posted his first shutout of the season and 24th of his career to help the Sharks win for a ninth time in 10 games this season. Howard was credited with his 17th career shutout and first of the season for the Red Wings, who have dropped their past two games.

Final Score: Colorado 1, Pittsburgh 0

Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Something had to give in a matchup between a team unbeaten at home and another without a loss on the road. The sublime play of Jean-Sebastien Giguere maintained Colorado's unblemished road mark. The veteran goaltender made 34 saves as the Avalanche blanked the Pittsburgh Penguins 1-0 at CONSOL Energy Center. Giguere picked up his third win in as many starts this season and his second shutout, keeping Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby off the scoresheet for the first time. Crosby had totaled seven goals and 10 assists in his eight-game point streak to begin the season. Gabriel Landeskog scored the game's only goal for Colorado, which improved to 8-1-0, including 5-0-0 away from the Mile High City. The Avalanche won just four road games during the shortened 2013 campaign. Giguere turned away 16 third-period shots, none better than his glove save to rob Chris Kunitz on a breakaway after a Colorado defenseman fell. Marc-Andre Fleury, Giguere's Pittsburgh counterpart, stopped 13 shots and suffered his first loss in eight games this year. The Penguins (7-2-0), who went 0-for-7 on the power play, had their season-opening win streak at home end at five games.
