Cocoa Beach, FL (Florida Today) -- Last week, federal prosecutors filed charges against two men they say"cannonballed" onto a manatee and her calf from a Cocoa Beach dock last year.
The incident was captured on an amateur video and posted to Facebook. It shows the suspects sprayingwater from a hose toward the drifting manatees, and one man leaps offthe dock onto the sea cows.
The video was originally shot in March of 2012, but only caught the eye of fish and wildlife officers when it was reposted to YouTube back in May.
Taylor Blake Martin and SethAndrew Stephenson each face a misdemeanor charge of prohibited acts on anendangered species, punishable by a fine of up to $100,000 or a year inprison.
Prosecutors cited the Endangered Species Act andFlorida Manatee Sanctuary Act in a court filing. No hearing date hasbeen set in U.S. District Court in Orlando.
Last year a St. Petersburg woman made national headlines after photos showed her riding on top of a manatee.
