JACKSONVILLE, Florida (WTLV) -- Retired educator Nana Hilsenbeck has had it with the delivery service, UPS.

Hilsenbeck is in a fight with the giant shipper since August over a package that may be somewhere in the county landfill.

She had ordered an item from Target and UPS delivered it to her home. Nobody answered, sothe driver placed it in a trash can and left a note on the door, explaining where it was located.

But Hilsenbeck had been away on vacation in Port Orange. While there, herhusband suffered a heart attack and was hospitalized in Ormond Beach after triple bypass surgery. She didn't return home until several months later.

A neighbor was asked to check on something and discovered the UPS note on the door. Hilsenbeck reflects and wonders if putting the packagein the trash was the best decision.

"Why didn't he take it to the post office?" she asked.

Apparently, while thepackage was hidden in a trash can, the county picked up the trash anddumped it.

Hilsenbeck reached out to UPS and Target for reimbursement

"They're very nice, but neither one is willing to do anything," she said.

Hilsenbeck said she feels like the two companies are acting like she did something wrong. The cost of the lost package is about $200.

"If a company wants to be responsible, they have to be responsible totheir customers," she said. "My husband ran a company for 30 years andif someone was upset, he made it right."

UPS spokeswoman Laurie Mallis said a claim has been approved and Target will be reimbursed.

"Target is the shipper and our claims are issued tothe shipper," said Mallis. "The customer needs to contact Target forfurther assistance."

Mallis said holiday shippers can protect their package two ways:

  • Requirea signature upon receipt
  • Sign upfor "UPS My Choice" -- it gives you control over how your package is delivered.

A spokesperson at Target said the company is looking into the case.
