Tampa, Florida -- Dogs are more than man's best friend. They're the ones we look to for a pick me up when we're down. And for one therapy dog, she's not just a healer, she's a survivor.
Holly makes regular visits to Moffitt Cancer Centerto cheer up patients and her joy is contagious.
A rescued golden retriever, Holly is one of Moffitt's most popular pet therapy dogs. She's a cancer patient herself. After living on the streets and ending up in a shelter, a rescue took her in before Kelly Pavone adopted her in June 2009.
A few months after she was adopted, Kelly noticed Holly wasn't acting like her usually self. Tests revealed she had cancer: seven tumors in the lungs and one in the breast. Kelly found a clinical trial. Now, after undergoing a new immunotherapy, Holly's cancer in her lungs is stabilized.
The vaccine is showing promise. It will be used in human clinical trials this year at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
Photojournalist Angela Clooney shows us how Holly's empathy for cancer patients comes through her paws as "the walking smile".
