Marco Island, Florida (News-Press) -- A wild boar that was a source of nuisance for beach-goers on Marco Island Sunday will instead be feeding the less fortunate.
TheMarco Island Police Department was forced the kill the wild pig shortlybefore 8 a.m. Sunday after they were called to the Charter Club ofMarco Island, 700 S. Collier Blvd., in response to a nuisance boarreport.
"Theanimal was first observed running down the boardwalk toward the beach, which caused fear amongst beach-goers," Dave Baer, a Marco policespokesman, reported Sunday. "The animal, which could not be contained orcontrolled effectively prior to dispatch, was donated to the St.Matthews House to assist with their efforts."
RobertBurns, communications manager for St. Matthew's House, said the carcassof the boar was delivered whole to the facility around noon.
"Whensomeone donates wild game we will try to use it to feed the residents,"he said, adding that donations of wild game or fish are made to theorganization several times a year.
"People find different ways to donate," Burns said. "When we get a donation we try to put it to good use."
Thepig will be sent to a local hog farmer who will then process the meat.Following the completion of all regulated inspections and preparationguidelines, Burns said, chefs with SMH Catering will use the meat as ameal option for shelter residents and Justin's Place Recovery Programparticipants.
"Theoutcome for the pig was unfortunate, but it does make us happy to knowwe will be able to do some good in the community and take care of thoseless fortunate," said Kristofer Jubinville, executive chef of SMHCatering.
Burns said wild meat was not as usual a donation as fish.
"People who hunt will donate, but we get more from fishermen," he said.
