Frostproof, Florida -- Polk County Sheriff's deputies have identified the man in killed in a single vehicle crash that closed most of the northbound lanes of U.S. Hwy 27 in the Frostproof area for several hours Sunday.

Investigators say around 5:29 p.m. 56-year-old Billy Joe King of Avon Park was driving a blue 2003 Dodge Neon in the outside lane, approaching the intersection of Gum Road, when witnesses said the car slowly went off the roadway and down onto the shoulder where it sideswiped a tree. After hitting the tree, the car flipped over onto its roof.

King was the only person inside the car and was wearing a seatbelt. He died at the scene.

The roadway was reduced to one lane heading north for several hours while deputies investigated the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
