St. Petersburg, Florida -- The Florida Department of Transportation says construction has begun on an $83 million project to improve east/west flow on Gandy Boulevard in St. Petersburg.

The road improvements will be between between Interstate 275 and 4th Street North. FDOT is constructing an elevated six-lane structure from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street to I-275, and a four-lane structure from MLK to east of 4th Street. In addition to the new lanes, pedestrian and bicycle routes will be created along the frontage roads.

Lane closures on Gandy, MLK, Roosevelt Boulevard and 4th Street will happen primarily during off-peak hours, and most detours will happen on weekends.

The project is set to finish in 2017.
