St. Petersburg, Florida -- Two men arrested Thursday forcarjacking an elderly woman and leading police on a car chase on Thursday made their first appearance in court Friday.
St. Pete Police say Travonte Banks and Savon Hunter are the men are behind a carjacking scheme that occurred in broad daylight near 21st Avenue N. and 7th Street N.
"My belief is there is always three sides to every story - their story, the other side and the truth," said Kashia Thornton who was in Pinellas County Court for the first appearance of her nephew Savon Hunter.
He is charged with violating probation. Travonte Banks faces the more serious charge - for the actual carjacking.
The 91-year-old woman told police the driver of the Dodge Ram pickup truck rear-ended her, and when she got out of the car to see what happened a man jumped into her Toyota Venza and took off. The other man followed right behind driving a stolen truck.
Thornton says the family is apologetic for what happened, "Everybody understand -- it was a mistake that was done. We are apologetic."
The incident was a scene Richard Miseyko said it isn't the norm for the Crescent Heights Neighborhood.
"It was disturbing because of our history here," said Miseyko. "There are reports here and there every once in a while of minor burglaries or thefts or things like that, but certainly nothing as violent as a carjacking."
After a 20-minute police chase through South St. Pete, Banks and Hunter ditched the SUV and took off running but were later picked up.
If you've ever been in a minor fender bender you're initial reaction is to get out of the car to check for damage, but officers explained that depending on the situation that may not be the best idea.
"If something like that occurs and you feel like something isn't right the best thing to do is just stay in your car and begin to call the police. If you feel the need, then you can go ahead and actually leave the area and try to get to a place where you can phone police," said Mike Puetz.
As for the woman who was carjacked, she is out of the hospital and recovering. She told 10 News on Friday she is not feeling well enough for visitors or an interview.
Currently, police are looking for a third possible suspect.
