Lakeland, Florida -- Today, LRMC leaders announced the largest capital investment the hospital has made since it was started 98 years ago - a completely new building on the southwest side of campus dedicated to medical needs of women and children.

The expansion will cost $250,000,000 and add 300,000 square feet to LRMC, which is already Florida's 5th largest hospital.

Registered nurse, Melissa Newlun, trains other RNs in the Mother-Baby unit at LRMC and thinks the expansion is worth it.

"I just think how wonderful it's going to be to have a new place for all of our patients to come to and enjoy, and a new learning center for everyone," she said.

This expansion includes a brand-new, private bed, neonatal intensive care unit, something that the hospital has never offered before.

"To be able to allow them to stay with their baby and just be a part of that care throughout the hospitalization is huge," said Shannon Hartwig, Director of Nursing for Women's and Children's Services.

Other new additions include:

  • Between 22 and 33 bed full service pediatric emergency department
  • 12 private suites for labor, delivery, and recovery
  • 64 private rooms dedicated to women's cardiology, gynecologic surgery, and cancer care
  • 3 surgical suites
  • Entire floor dedicated to physician office space for specialized medicine centered on women and children.

The goal is to have the expansion done in just three years to givenurses like Melissa Newlun a new space designed specifically for the needs of women and children.
