Highlands County, Florida -- A suspect was shot and killed after attacking homes in Sebring with a high-powered assault rifle.

Just before 5 a.m. on Sunday, March 9, Highlands County sheriff's deputies were called after reports of shots being fired at homes on Plantation Road in Sebring.

When deputies arrived on scene, they were immediately under fire from a high-powered assault rifle. Deputies took cover behind their patrol cars and behind houses, struggling in the heavy fog to see the shooter.

When deputies were able to make out the suspect, they ordered him to drop his weapon. The suspect, 31-year-oldFloyd Gene Hodge,did not comply and a deputy shot and killedhim.

Patrol cars and homes in the area suffered significant damage from bullets.

The case remains under investigation.
