Pinellas Park, Florida -- A woman called 911 and her husband as her minivan sank into a retention pond after she ran off the road early Monday morning.

Her husband frantically searched for her alongside police officers and sheriff's deputies, but by the time they found her, it was too late.

Jennifer Lee Wolfe, 35, did not survive.

Detectives say her minivan hit a sign in the median of 28th St. N. as she left St. Petersburg and entered Pinellas Park, going northbound as the road curved to the right.

Her dark-colored minivan shot straight across the oncoming lanes and went into a deep roadside retention pond in front of an office park, investigators said.

Wolfecalled 911 from her cell phone, but hung up, according to Officer Gabiel Lopez, an acting sergeant with St. Petersburg Police. When the 911 dispatcher called the number back, there was no answer.

As she sank in her minivan, Wolfe then called her husband.

Police say Wolfe told her husbandBrandon that she had been run off the road by another car and she was in the water near 28th St. N.

He rushed to the scene and frantically searched.Hefinally called 911 at 12:57 a.m., Lopez said -- 21 minutes afterhis wife'sinitial 911 hangup call.

Police and sheriff's deputies joined the search along the road, looking at several different bodies of water with no success, Lopez said. They called for help from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office helicopter.

Deputies in the helicopter spotted the completely submerged vehicle. Officers and deputies from the Pinellas Park Police Department and Pinellas County Sheriff's Office dove in and pulledWolfe to the surface.

Rescuers rushed her to Northside Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead.

Strangely, police say Wolfe's minivan landed on top of another car that was already sitting on the floor of the retention pond.

There was no one inside that sedan, and it has not been reported stolen. Detectives are looking into where that car came from.

Wolfe's husband told police she was driving home from Walmart, Lopez said.

Detectives say there are some skid marks on the road, and their investigation will hopefully determine conclusively exactly what caused the crash.

According to police at the scene, Wolfe wasmarried and has children.
