St. Petersburg, Florida -- The candidates vying to replace the late C.W. Bill Young in Congress expect the race to be very close. But with just one day to go each candidate also sounded confident.
"I think the more voters pay attention to this race, I think the race begins to favor us each day," said Republican David Jolly.
"I'm confident at the end of Tuesday that we're going to have the votes we need to send my voice to Washington," added Democrat Alex Sink.
Congressional District 13 voters on Tuesday will choose between Sink, Jolly and Libertarian Lucas Overby.
Overby continues to insist he can win the race and repeated to 10 News last week that he expects to get more than 20% of the vote.
As of Saturday afternoon about 4,600 more Republicans had voted than Democrats, according to numbers released by the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections. The numbers also show a four-day trend of the Republican gap widening each day.
Yet Sink did not seem concerned Monday.
"Enormous numbers of Republican have told us that they are voting for me because they believed that I am the person who represents the moderate values of the people of this district," the former state chief financial officer said.
"Of course I feel better knowing there's more Republican ballots coming in than Democrats, but we're working to talk to every voter and get the support of every voter," Jolly said.
Polls close on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Note: State law mandates an automatic machine recount if the margin between candidates or issues in unofficial results is less than 0.5% or less. If the margin between candidates or issues in the unofficial results is 0.25% or less, state law mandates a manual recount be conducted.
Young served in Congress for more than four decades before passing away in October.
