Polk City, Florida - A crash involving a semi in Polk City early Tuesday morning left the parents of a family of four dead, along with one of their children.
Polk County Sheriff's deputies say around 12:10 a.m., Justin Sims was driving the family home to Dade City in a 1999 Buick Century west on Deen Still Roadafter shopping at an outlet mall in Orlando.
When Justin got to a stop sign at Commonwealth Avenue N, deputies say he failed to stop and his carwas hit by a semi-truck pulling a trailer that was heading northbound on Commonwealth Avenue N and dragged the car approximately 400 feet.
Justin, 31, his wife Sharonda, 28, and their 5-year-old son Savion were killed. Two other children in the back seat, 7-year-old Ariel Sims and 2-year-old Kitty Sims, were airlifted to Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital and are in critical condition. Arienne Sims, just 3 months old, was taken by ambulance in stable condition with no visible injuries.
Only the baby was properly restrained in her carseat. No one else was wearing seatbelts, according to deputies. On Tuesday afternoon, the infant was released from the hospital to a family member.
The truck driver, 31-year-old Antonio Garcia, was wearing his seatbelt and did not suffer any injuries.
At this point, no charges are pending. Deputies discovered Justin Sims had a suspended driver's license from September 2013 for failure to pay traffic fines.
Sheriff Grady Judd says a preliminary investigation does not show drugs or alcohol were factors in the accident.
