Bakersfield, California -- Four-year-old Jeremy was on his bike in his Bakersfield, California yard Tuesday. Then, in mere seconds, playtime turned terrifying. A neighbor's dog came around a parked car and lunged for the boy biting and dragging him.

Then, Jeremy's cat, Tara, came to the rescue pouncing on the dog sending it fleeing.

"It just happened so fast, out of nowhere. I didn't even really know what happened until afterwards when my husband showed me our surveillance video and I said, 'Our cat saved our son!' " said Erika Triantafilo.

Jeremy, who has mild autism, shares hugs and kisses with his hero. Thanks to her quick action, he escaped with only a few stitches.

"When I saw the tape I couldn't believe -- she had no fear, not once. I think did it cross her mind that her life was in danger. She took care of my son and that is the most amazing part of it." said Triantafilo.

"She's a hero!" exclaimed Jeremy.

Jeremy's mother says the dog escaped while their neighbor was pulling out of their gated driveway, and the neighbor called 911.

The Bakersfield Police spokesman says the dog will be quarantined for 10 days, then euthanized.
