(News-Press.com) - A severely injured sea turtle is safe after being rescued by Coast Guard crew members off the coast of Longboat Pass on Sunday.
A person notified Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector St. Petersburg of an injured sea turtle with a spear penetrating the shell. It was unable to dive under the surface because of air leaking into the shell.
Coast Guard Station Cortez crew members arrived and recovered the sea turtle without further injury. The turtle was taken to Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in Sarasota Pass. Officials at the aquarium will examine the turtle to determine the extent of its injuries.
