1. Arthur arrives in time for Fourth of July
Okay, we know Hurricane Arthur may be messing with some of your holiday plans, but chin up. It's our nation's birthday, after all. Obama is hosting a barbecue on the White House lawn for military service members. He will also preside — as he has in previous years — at a naturalization ceremony for immigrant active duty military service members, veterans, reservists and spouses. And don't forget to watch Nathan's Hot Dog eating contest at 2:00 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
2. Malia Obama celebrates her Sweet 16
How did this happen? On July 4, Malia Obama turns a very Sweet 16. It seems like just yesterday she was the adorable 10-year-old girl calling out, "I love you Daddy," as our future president appeared on a huge video screen at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. 3. Lou Gehrig's "luckiest man" speech was 75 years ago
The world was stunned 75 years ago Friday when baseball great Lou Gehrig announced that he had been diagnosed with a lethal disease, but was still "the luckiest man on the face of the Earth." He was grateful for his career, his coaches and, most of all, his family, he said in a Yankee Stadium speech that brought to public consciousness a disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS — still often called Lou Gehrig's disease.
4. France vs. Germany and Brazil vs. Colombia in World Cup quarterfinals
One thing for certain on Friday is that a South American team and a European team will secure their spots in the World Cup semifinals. Host Brazil takes on the Colombia team, which has won all four of its games so far. A European presence in the World Cup semifinals is assured as Germany and France meet at the Maracana.
5. Report: Hamas says it is ready for a cease-fire
The Palestinian militant group is ready for talks with Israel, according to a BBC report. The two sides have engaged in clashes in recent days over the kidnap and killing of a Palestinian teenager which followed the discovery of the bodies of three abducted Israeli teenagers.
