ROSEMOUNT, Minnesota (KARE11) -- Talk about a rough way to start a morning.

Amy Simones was sleeping in the bedroom of her home in Rosemount when she was awakened by the sound of lightning hitting her family's house.

"It sounded like a bomb went off in my house," she said. "Pretty scary."

Simones scrambled out of bed and ran out into the living room where her husband Joe was getting dressed for work. He grabbed a bucket from the closet, filled it with water and put of the flames that were jumping from the wall of their bedroom. "it was crazy, a bit nerve-wracking," he recalled with a touch of understatement.

Fire investigators say it appears a bolt of lightning hit a tree in the Simones yard and then jumped to the corner of their home where the couple's bedroom is. It melted an electrical socket and lamp, and caused the drywall to start on fire.

"It was about 6 inches from where I was laying," Amy Simones recalled. "I was just so scared, didn't know what to do so I just ran."

Amy grabbed the couple's 3-year-old son and called 911 while her husband was putting out the fire. They say they are lucky there wasn't more damage, and that the house didn't burn down.
